Warner Power's SmarTran System can substantially reduce transformer losses.

Published on Monday, 27 September 2010

WARNER, New Hampshire - Independent studies have shown that many distribution transformers operate at average loads as low as 20-25% of their rated power, where transformer efficiencies deteriorate significantly. With the nationwide effort to reduce energy consumption, improving building efficiency has become a prime target. As higher building efficiencies are achieved, this will reduce transformer loads further, with the expectation that average loads maybe as low as 12% of nameplate rating. At this point transformer losses may be as high as 5% of the total power consumed.

Warner Power’s SmarTran® system can substantially reduce transformer losses at such non-optimized loads, by eliminating up to 60% of transformer losses. Instead of one large transformer, three small transformers are used, together with autonomous controls and switchgear that balances the transformer capacity to the load. This means at times of low power use, such as nights and weekends, the entire building can be supplied by a single small, efficient transformer.

SmarTran may be applied to all types of transformers, but additional valuable savings may be realized with highly efficient Hexaformer® type transformers, to meet and exceed the new NEMA Premium transformer efficiency standard.
